Winning start for Sparsholt U13 Girls

Sparsholt wrote a new chapter in its near 100-year history on Wednesday night when the club played host to its first-ever girls’ cricket fixture at its Locks Lane home.

The club’s newly formed under-13 girls’ team took on Ropley and while the weather did its best not to play ball, the match finished in a win for the home side in their inaugural fixture.

The result, of course, was largely irrelevant. Of far greater significance is the enormous step forward the club has made in introducing a girls’ team to their already thriving youth set-up. Thanks in part to the introduction of the ECB’s All-Stars programme, the number of girls playing regularly for Sparsholt has increased enormously over the past five years.

The team will play alongside Easton, St Cross, Ropley, Petersfield and Hursley Park in a six team league in 2021. The hope is that this ground-breaking first step leads to more girls playing the sport this summer and beyond.

Firsts get off to a winning start

Having been invited to bat by Sparsholt skipper David Banks, Andover posted a seemingly above par 195-8 on a London Road pitch offering significant assistance to the bowlers. A crash bang start to the innings was halted by two wickets in two balls, both caught by ‘keeper Josh May off Tom Ley – one regulation, the other a blinding one hander. Wickets fell regularly after that, with Liam Doran taking 3 for 34, as Andover declined to 124-8. Matt Hooper (40*) and Roman Duckworth (24*) then showed their teammates the benefits of a more prudent approach to shot selection to achieve respectability at the break.

Sparsholt’s innings also got off to an aggressive start, built around a typically belligerent 44 by Stuart Taylor, who put on 75 with debutant Dan Sumner (21). The ball continued to move around under heavy skies, and Babu Veettil in particular was unlucky not to return better figures than his 2-30. The early fireworks took all the pressure off the scoring rate, allowing Liam Doran to score a fine 53* to steer Sparsholt home by 6 wickets with nearly 9 overs to spare. He was ably assisted by the team’s second newcomer, Ashley “AC” Collinson with an assured 23 not out.

2020 Season update

Fixtures changed for the First xi due to the withdrawal of basingstoke mean time our first game of 2020 was away at Rowledge where we came a close second, the seconds and thirds also suffered defeat at the hands of two very strong Alton sides. Saturday 25th saw all games rained off after brief starts and sunday in the nvko we weren’t beaten by a runs away at Sarisbury.

2020 Season

Sparsholts season kicks off with an internal match with two sides kippered by Mike Haworth and Jamie Skeoch , this takes place at the Norman Edwards ground tomorrow.

The season starts the following week with fixtures for all 3 sides in rejigged competitions

Saturday fixtures are in the picture with each side playing in a league cup.

The seconds and thirds are in a joint competition in which each result contributes to an overall Winchester Club Championship

Nets and Bowling machine

In addition to the open net we can now offer use of the bowling machine for your practice at £5 per session.

Guidance is being drawn up on its usage.

If requested we can also provide video footage of your net session via the new netcam.

Please note only one net can be in operation at any one time.

We will be looking to move the bowling machine to the artificial if needed.

If you would like to book it please select the option on the booking form when booking your practice slot.

ECB update

The ECB have released an update on the use of practice facilities in the current lockdown.

The Committee are currently working on getting the necessary measuresin place to allow some practice on a 1 2 1 or family group basis. We will communicated further details via the club email shortly.

Government Statement

Following the recent communication from the Government we will be reviewing the current situation at the club. The committee have a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening where we will be discussing a number of agenda items.
