Rain and a Win

Posted by Tony Edwards on 17 May 2018

Sparsholt's first XI hosted Rowledge on an overcast day at Locks Lane with the away side winning the toss and electing to bat first on what looks like a fantastic wicket for batting. After a tight start, the Rowledge openers capitalised on some loose bowling resulting in a flurry of boundaries  taking them to 71 without loss. However, with spin entering the attack in the form of Liam Doran, Nick Doubell and captain Jeremy Frith the momentum swung back towards the home team with Liam making the initial break through quickly followed by two more quick wickets leaving the visitors 93-3.  A solid partnership stabilised the innings, however another flurry of wickets late in the innings curtesy of Dan Weir meant Rowledge ended their innings 208-8 which was potentially 20 runs short of par. Batting Highlight: Nick Morant (49) and Fraser Wilson (46). Bowling Highlight: Dan Weir (3-50) and Jeremy Frith (2-33).

Sparsholt did not get off to an ideal start losing Frith in the 2nd over with the score still being 0. As the rain began to fall Sparsholt piled on the runs with vice-captain Mike Haworth reaching 44* including 9 boundaries taking the score to 66-1 off 16 overs before the rain proved to be the winner with both teams leaving the field with no chance of completing the game.

This week Sparsholt's 2nd XI travelled to Bournemouth to play Winton 2ndXI. Winning the toss on a cloudy and overcast day Sparsholt captain Jamie Skeoch chose to take advantage of the new ball and have a bowl. Some tight bowling from opening pair of Tim Ndowra (2-10) and Josh Williams (0-11) left the hosts finding it difficult to score and on 10 for 1 from the first 10 overs. An injury to Lockyer from taking a catch forced a bowling change to bring on Mark Stone (4-16) and Mike Doubell (3-19). After a lot of resistance Stone managed to bowl the hosts opening bat and captain which led to a fall of the tail end. This left Winton all out for 93 and Sparsholt in a very good position for another victory.

Opening pair of Skeoch (3) and Andy Steggall (25) started well however the Sparsholt captain fell early doors. Josh Williams (11) came in and solidly saw off the opening bowlers along with Steggall. Once Williams fell Chris Mitchell was brought to the crease. Having time on his side he chose his shots well and batted on to a well-made (35*). However the chase was not as plain sailing as was expected. A hat-trick from Lama (3-13) claimed the scalps of Stegall, Worth and Whiting. Nothing the batsman could do (except maybe Worth). The cool heads of Mike Doubell (15*) and Chris Mitchell saw Sparsholt to victory in the 28thover and onto a second win in the teams promotion chasing season.

No match report from the third XI this week, but they suffered a loss in their first game of the season against a strong Odiham & Greywell side.

Sparsholt's Women also had their first W10 fixtures of the season, playing against strong Twyford, Easton & Martyr Worthy and St Cross sides, but finished the day with 3 wins out of three - with strong performances from a number of the team.
