Following last weeks poor batting display against Langley Manor , Skipper Andy Worth was looking for a return to form of the team which they showed so well last season. Winning the toss and inserting Portsmouth the pace attack of Dilley and Ruffel had Portsmouth reeling at 23-3 with wickets for both opening bowlers. Harry Collier and Mathew Shaw put up some resistance taking them to 69 for 5 with spin twins Mike Doubell and Dave Gough extracting turn from the wicket. Patrick Burns Portsmouths Australian Overseas hit a quickfire 33 but Portsmouth were bowled out for 131 with Ruffel aking his first 4 for and Doubell and Vokes picking up a brace each.
SParsholts reply started poorly with Ed Jenner out without scoring and Lewis Dunfird falling for 5, Tom Foster came to the crease at 6 for 2 and built a partnership with Ruffel to take the score to 58 for 3 which soon beacme 58 for 4 as Tognarelli was run out in a mid wicket mix up. Ruffell then fell to Vikram Dawson and Gough to the vicious turn of Marston left Sparsholt on 69 for 6. Worth and Doubell batted patiently trying to wait for the bad ball which were few and far between and took the score to 82 for 7 before Worth was clean bowled. Some boundaries ensued from Vokes, Mike Doubell and a big six from Alex Dilley but wickets continued to fall with Sparsholt ending on 105 all out. A disappointing result for the team but a realisation that runs do not come easy in the early season.
